Getting a Mobile Phone Plan

You can get a phone plan with your passport or ARC. For short stays, a prepaid (USIM) plan works with just your passport; for longer stays, a postpaid plan with your ARC and a bank account/card is usually cheaper and better for identity verification. A phone number in your own name is key for bank and government verification.

What to bring

  • Passport (short stay) or ARC (long stay / postpaid recommended)
  • For postpaid: a bank account or card in your name (auto-pay)
  • Your ARC number, nationality, and stay period (for sign-up)
  • English name and birth date matching your passport

Step by step

  1. 1Choose a carrier (SKT, KT, LG U+) or a budget MVNO (알뜰폰)
  2. 2Apply for a USIM/plan at a store or online
  3. 3Verify your identity with your passport or ARC
  4. 4Insert the USIM and activate — set up auto-pay for postpaid

Tips

  • Budget MVNOs run on the SKT/KT/LG networks for much lower prices — great for long stays.
  • Prepaid USIMs are sold at airports and convenience stores (handy on arrival/short stays).
  • ⚠️ A phone opened in someone else’s name risks identity theft and billing disputes — always use your own name.
  • Check contract/cancellation terms before leaving Korea or moving. Unpaid bills can hurt your credit.
