Currency Exchange
You can exchange currency at banks, the airport, registered exchange shops, or bank apps. The below is general information only — Hangukin does not exchange currency for you. City exchange shops or bank apps usually offer better rates than the airport. ⚠️ Rates vary by provider and timing, so we do not quote fixed figures — compare and confirm directly.
What you need
- Passport or ARC
- (For large amounts) you may be asked about the source of funds
How to
- 1Choose a bank, bank app, or registered exchange shop.
- 2Prepare ID (passport or ARC).
- 3Check the applied rate and fee first (buy and sell rates differ).
- 4Verify the amount received and the receipt on the spot.
Tips
- Use your bank app’s “preferential rate” to save on fees (the rate varies by bank and timing).
- For large amounts, compare rates in advance (we do not quote fixed rates here).
- 🚨 Street/messenger/social-media “private exchange” (without official registration) carries high risk of counterfeit bills, fraud, and money laundering — and may violate the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act. Use only banks or registered exchange shops.
- 🚨 If someone says “the rate is much better now” and asks you to send a “deposit first,” it may be a scam — never send money first.
- 🚨 Always check the bills for forgery and the full amount on the spot (it’s hard to fix later).
- If unsure whether an exchange operator is registered, you can check the FSS “FINE” portal (fine.fss.or.kr).
